Midweek Rides

Tuesday and Friday Midweek Rides – all year round – Market Square 9:30

For those who have other commitments at the weekends, or rather, who can make time for a longer ride in the week and are looking for some company to ride with – there are two ‘no drop’ rides on Tuesday and Friday mornings from the Market Square at 09:30.  Speed dependent on who turns up, with the option of splitting in to 2 or more groups. We usually stop at a cafe half way.

Routes will be advertised in the Midweek Riders WhatsApp group and are usually around 50 miles at a pace of 15-16mph.

Development Ride

After several requests, mostly from ‘would-be’ members, we decided to offer a ride for those who aspire to ride with the club rides, but don’t quite have the fitness, endurance or speed quite yet.

During the main season (April to October) we now offer the ‘Development Ride’ – expected speed – 12-13mph, max distance 25km/16 miles.

Ideal for those who want to join SNCC/Club rides but need to build up their fitness. It could also suit those who want to build their confidence, or are recovering from injury.  If you are new to the club, we will ask you to join after one ‘test’ ride (there are liability reasons for this).

We ride from April to September Saturdays at 9am from the market square, and the usual route can be found HERE

Please email web@stneotscycling.club  if you’d like to attend or know someone who would, and/or if you are a member of SNCC,  join the Development Ride WhatsApp group where we will supply the GPX/route details in advance.

Club Sandwich

A training ride which leaves the Market Square at 10:30 am on Saturday morning during the summer months (april – October). We ride to Cambourne, to the old 428 at a leisurely pace, we then ride in chaingang formation along the ‘sandwich filling’, then we either have coffee at Greens and then ride back to St Neots, or we ride back and have coffee at Shume.

The sandwich filling strava segment can be found HERE

This is an excellent training ride, riding at pace, learning how to ride in a chaingang formation, or simply wanting to test yourself to see how long you can hang on for. If you get dropped as part of the effort, we will always meet up again at the corner of Broad Street / High Street in Cambourne afterwards (we will point out the meetup spot on our way out).

Everesting Ride

Club Time Trial

SNCC Femmes

Wednesdays April until End of September

From the SNCC women’s representative:

If you have never been part of a cycling club – joining a male dominated space can be a bit daunting, and the most common question I get asked from prospective female members is: “Will I be able to keep up?”

Not wanting to patronise anyone, or take away from the many strong female riders we have in the club and elsewhere… fact is that a woman of similar fitness to an equivalently sized male will ride at a 1-2mph slower pace for the same amount of effort. Why?

We have, even proportionally, 15% smaller hearts and lungs, and even the leanest carry 10% more body fat (which we absolutely need but does NOT help us go faster ;-)). Add to that that we are, on average, smaller, and what could be a comfortable pace for a 6ft male is basically “hanging on for dear life” zone 4 for someone like me 😂 (5ft4 and relatively fit). Especially on the flat Cambridgeshire roads, where watts per kg doesn’t help me. On a positive note, you just get fitter than the equivalent male – sorted! ;-)

At SNCC we have a growing number of female riders and committee members and are committed to encourage more women not just into the club, but into the sport of cycling in general (as well as my personal mission to get more women into time trialling ;-) ). We offer a regular Wednesday evening “women only” ride which leaves from the traffic lights outside One Leisure at 7pm (30-50km, 15-17mph), and during the winter months we meet more sporadically, but there is usually a female member on hand to ride with if you haven’t ridden with us before and want to get a feel for pace etc.

Also, some of us race on Zwift, and we have a very friendly and supportive women’s only whatsapp group where you can ask all of the questions you may not want to ask elsewhere (you might think I’m joking but the second most common question I get from women who have never ridden as part of a club before is: “What if i need a wee on a group ride?” ;-) ).

Please do get in touch!

Off road / gravel

All year, please check the whatsapp group during the off season to make sure the ride is going ahead

For those who enjoy gravel/off-road riding, St Neots is blessed with a great network of bridleways and gravel tracks – we meet every Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm from the Market Square. Routes will be posted every week on the Gravel/Offroad WhatsApp group. Please note that this is a NO DROP ride and we usually meet in the pub with the other wednesday riders (women’s group and road group) afterwards!

We also organise several off-road rides every year, most notably the annual Hell of St Neots, in honour of Paris-Roubaix, annually held on the same day.

Chain gang

Tuesdays, April until End of September

What is it?

A Chain Gang is a faster training ride (quicker than a club run) for those riders looking to improve their fitness and speed. Each rider takes a turn at the front (through and off), and the more riders there are, the shorter each stint at the front. It is also great for learning through and off technique and for getting a taste of riding at race pace.

If numbers allow, we form two (or even three) groups who set off a few minutes apart from each other in a Hare & Hounds contest to see if the lead group can ‘stay away’ or the chasing group(s) can make the catch.

Route

From the Market Square we head out over the Town Bridge and up Crosshall Road and over the A1 on the B645 to Hail Weston, Great Staughton, Kimbolton, Tilbrook and Chelveton to the roundabout at Higham Ferrars, a distance of around 15 miles to the turn, before heading back on the same route to give a total distance of just over 30 miles in total.

See the Strava link for more details here.

Chaingang ride: From April to end of September on Tuesday evenings, meet at the market square 18:45
