1887 Participation
Why 1887?
Because it is the year SNCC was founded.
You will sometimes see 1898 referenced, but that relates to a slightly different definition of SNCC and the district. We will come back to that history properly next winter when we do the next “blast from the past.” For now, we are going with what the club crest clearly states: 1887.
The origins of a participation prize go back almost as far. The screenshot above is from a 1950s bulletin. In those days, participation determined “clubman of the year” — and in 2025, we brought this back under a slightly different name – “The 1887 Participation Award”
What is it?
Most importantly, this is something every member can take part in. This is not only for hill climbers. It is not only for TT riders. It is for anyone who shows up, helps and/or joins in.

How points worked in 2025
- 1 point: Participation in club activities, including chaingang, off-road, women’s ride, TT, everesting, club sandwich, club run, or any other SNCC event (excluding socials and AGM).
- 2 points: Helping or volunteering at events (for example, TT marshalling), participating in interclub events, representing SNCC in races or time trials or other events which have clearly listed finishers – such as audaxes.
We want to recognise the riders who put in the effort, try new things, support others, and help make our events happen.
The 2025 Winner was Geoff – Congratulations.
